Math Team is an activity open to 6-8th grade KG students. We attend several math competitions throughout the year. The competitions have both team and individual events. Some components will allow students to use calculators. For these, the regular calculator used for math classes is fine. Students are generally working on past competition questions at weekly meetings. Depending on student interest, and specific competition requirements, some students may be not eligible to participate in some team events. We will always try to include as many Math Team members in each event as possible. Parents are welcome to attend all competitions, but they are not allowed in the rooms with the students. They can wait in the gymnasium or cafeteria and watch the awards ceremony.
Math Team meetings are every Monday after school, from 3:15 to 4:00 in Room 35, Ms Yunker's room. Meetings will not be held on early dismissal days or non-student attendance days. Competitions are usually held on weekends. Competition schedules will be released with as much notice as possible.
The purpose of Math Team is to:
-- engage in mathematical thinking that goes beyond the standard curriculum taught within the classroom
-- challenge oneself and persevere in solving new problems
-- compete in math competitions against students from surrounding schools
To become a member of Math Team, you must:
-- be willing to attend all meetings
-- stay academically and behaviorally eligible
-- be ready to learn concepts that might not be presented in class
Students should bring a notebook, pencil, and calculator to Math Team meetings. Students may wish to keep a folder for the various handouts which will be given throughout the year. Updates and information will be given through this webpage, students' D91 email, and at Math Team meetings. Please be sure to check these regularly.
Thank you for your interest in Math Team! I look forward to a great year with you all!
